Social Distancing with Baseball Cards: Rickey, Reggie and Hot Packs

Aloha, everybody,

Today's Social Distancing with Baseball Cards brings us Reggie and Rickey cardboard, along with the one time I hit a hot pack at a card show. It contained a complete, sweet insert set.

Enjoy and aloha!

Ripping Some Sunday Packs from the BFG

Aloha, everybody,

As you may remember, good ol' Wes sent over a big ol' box of assorted goodies to me from his Big Fun Game.

There was sooo much good stuff in there, I still haven't finished ripping all the packs that he sent me. I've been holding them on the side just for an occasion like this.

Let's rip a couple, shall we...

Let's lead off with 1988 Score - because these cards are "photo quality"!

These will work. A nice Molitor with a dirtied up uniform and a member of the Big Red Machine with big red stirrups.

Here's a 3-D card that is spposed to commemorate Yaz's role as a hero in the 1967 pennant race.

It turns out this card's claim to fame is to be an error card. Note the sentence on the back that has the Tigers playing in two stadiums at the same time (it should read, "the Twins were at Fenway").

I always love to pull a World Series hero, Joe Carter card...

The blue overtones and shadows make this a very attractive card...

Now the DonRuss pack...

We get a sentimental favorite and a Dodgers cuppa coffee man...

Yount is always a good pull...

We close with this simple puzzle piece. There's not much here but a fragment, just a bat and the top of a cap...but it's the perfect design. It would make a great wall painting. Doncha think?

Thanks Wes, this is a prize that is still giving!

Aloha and happy Sunday!

When Cellophane Was King

Aloha, everybody,

Here are some more goodies from my big box o' prizes that I scored from the Big Fun Game. Let's rip some packs (and a box)!

This was the first Victory pack I ripped. I was surprised to find said Victory cards and Upper Deck Choice cards in the same pack. Was that a usual thing?

I'll bet it wasn;t usual to pull a Dodger from each of the brands...

The rack pack gave up a few cool cards. I don't remember Omar Vizquel playing for the Mariners.

It's a couple more Dodgers!

These packs are great for old school unis. From Score...

Yowza! Mike Scioscia in a rare batting photo...

Finally, a mixed batch from the 1987 Fleer League Leaders set. Check out Goose with the Roy Krok sleeve patch, Brett and Schmidtty in baby blue, and keeping my Dodgers streak alive, Bob Welch in the photo Fleer didn't even bother to center correctly.

More cool packs and cards and stuff to come from my big prize box soon.

Aloha!

Raz Picks Up The Last Prize of the Night

Aloha, late nighters,

Raz was the first to correctly guess Clayton Kershaw was peeking at us from behind the baseball card packs, so he snags the Bonus Prize...

It's a DonRuss Press Proof, numbered 64/199. Enjoy Raz.

The game picks up again tomorrow with The Lost Collector's pick.

Aloha!

Jon's Second Pick is Snake Eyes, Number 11

Aloha, everybody,

Jon stole the 60's Vintage and then Gavin stole it from him. That prize is now locked up, and Jon chooses Prize Number 11 with his second pick. It's the Mixed Packs Lot...

It's a couple of DonRuss wax packs and a rack pack, Triple play, and a couple of value packs of 2017 Topps flagship and Archives.

The Lost Collector let us know he's going to make his pick tomorrow morning. He'll be choosing from Numbers 3, 5, 9,10, 12 or possibly stealing...
Prize 1: 50's Vintage
Prize 2: Wheaties Boxes
Prize 4: Clemens, Schmidt, Ripken
Prize 6: Young Stars, Rookies
Prize 7: 70's Vintage
Prize 8: Autos, Relics Lot
Prize 9: Dodgers Figurines
Prize 11: Mixed Packs Lot
Prize 13: 60's Vintage (Locked)

Let's run a quick bonus prize before we shut down for the night. Hopefully, it's not too late for the east coasters. This bonus is a bit different. The winner is the first who can identify who that is peeking out from behind the baseball packs. Not eligible: Jon and The Lost Collector.

Aloha!

Big Fun Prizes Arrive in Big Fun Boxes

Aloha, everybody,

Are you playing in the game currently running over at Johnny's Trading Spot? Well, this post isn't about that.

That game is riffing off the Big Fun Game that my good buddy, Wes, recently hosted on his blog, Willinghammer Rising. I was lucky enough to win a big fun box chock fulla baseball stuff. What a haul!

In all my blogging days I've never received so many goodies in one shot. Today I'm showing off a small sampling of what was in this big fun box.

Oh, there's a whooooole lotta fun stuff in here. I'm showing just a bit because Wes and John have now inspired me to riff off them and put together my own humble version of the games they hosted. A few items from this box will become prizes in my game, so I'm going to keep some things secret.

Leading off is a 1981 Topps Giant Photo Card. I haven't opened this yet, so who's inside is still a mystery to me...

Wes included a bunch packs in the box. I'm looking forward to opening this one and sharing the cards with you all in a later post...

Here's a 1987 young Wally Joyner. It's my scan that's blurry. The image is clean...

I got a few of these rack packs. This one is 1990 DonRuss. The Cal Ripken card on the front would have made this a must buy if you spotted it back then...

Finally today, something Big Fun and a bit creepy...

Not because it's a Yankee, it's the puffed out head. Guidry's face and body are embossed so they rise above the surface of the card. It's kinda weird, and I'm not sure I want to see this staring at me from the corner of a dark room.

That's just one of the fun and funky oddballs contained in the box. Don't forget about those 300 and 400 count boxes that are FULL of cards. I haven't even scratched the surface of the big fun awaiting my explorations. Stay tuned to see more of what's awaiting inside.

Wes, THANKS, brother, for this ultra-cool prize.

Aloha!

Sometimes Little Things Bring Big Joy

Aloha, everybody,

While I was going through my trade bait box and putting together goodies for Operation PWE, I came across a few cards that I found a new appreciation for. As a result, these cards are going into my binders as new additions to my PC. How did I miss these the first time I saw them?

Leading off is Jose Lima as a DonRuss Rated Rookie...

If Lima was pitching against your team, you probably hated his on-field celebrations. I get that, but I'll gladly take a pitcher who jumps for joy over a job well done over one who scowls and curses at batters who hit home runs off of him. You know, like that bum from San Francisco.

Lima Time came to Los Angeles in 2004 and he quickly became a fan favorite. He earned a spot in my Dodger Blue heart in Game 3 of the NLDS, when the cheatin' St. Louis Cardinals were looking like they could sweep the Dodgers.

Lima pitched a shutout against the Cards and briefly returned hope to the Dodgers faithful. I still remember that game clearly.

Next up is a damn Yankee...

It's a great shot of Doc Gooden being carried on the shoulders of his teammates after pitching his only no-hitter.

Bonus: Mariano Rivera photobombing.

How about some vintage? Check!
From a defunct team? Check!
From a bullpen coach sportin' an old-time catchers glove? Check!
With ever-lovin' baby blues? Double check!

I passed this next one off as junk cardboard featuring scrubs...until I looked closer and noticed young Bo Jackson and Frank Thomas as teammates!

Bonus: Lurking Comiskey Park!

A Hall of Fame southpaw on Conlon cardboard...

The last card up comes with a bit of a disclaimer. This one isn't actually the card I found in the trade bait box, that one went into my binder as an upgrade. This one is now taking its place, and it's a sweet classic...

Unfortunately this card is stained from scotch tape. On the bright side it features a couple of legends, Don "World Series Perfect Game" Larsen and The Perfessor.

The simple act of going through cards from a shoebox yielded some great little surprises. Aint that what our hobby is all about?

Aloha!

Saturday Batters Up !

Hey everybody,

Here comes an easy saturday post of some players who let thier bats do the talking back in the day...

Donruss was my favorite card maker in the 90's.  They had the best batting action shots and I thought they designed the best inserts.

Even if you're not a yankees fan, you gotta have one Donnie Baseball in the PC.

Speaking of well -designed cards, '94 Flair here is one of my favorite sets.  This was one of the first 'premium sets', and I think one of the best.  Almost 20 years have passed and these cards still hold up through the test of time.

Here's great vintage with 2 batting legends who I was lucky enough to see play.

Here's Carew again with a young Reggie Smith on my nomination for the dullest Topps set ever.

Finishing up with another one of the great set designs.  Furillo was an iron man out in right field and was a clutch WS batter, winning titles with both Brooklyn and L.A.

 THANKS for reading!
