Social Distancing with Baseball Cards: Rickey, Reggie and Hot Packs

Aloha, everybody,

Today's Social Distancing with Baseball Cards brings us Reggie and Rickey cardboard, along with the one time I hit a hot pack at a card show. It contained a complete, sweet insert set.

Enjoy and aloha!

Weekend Card Show Loot

Aloha, everybody,

I trotted out to the card show this weekend to see what I could see.

Besides that, I just had a warning shot fired across my bow from mi hermano, Wes. I had to gather up some ammo for my counter-attack, although Wes' Kung Fu is very powerful. That's a hint about a little something I found for you, hermano.

I've also been gathering up some fixins to drop on some others out there. Some kinda Operation PWE is in the air.

Before we get to all that, let's take a peek at some of the cool cardboard I picked up for my own self while I was out.

Leading off is, of course, Rickey Henderson.

This dealer had a good assortment of Kellog's 3-D Superstars. I pounced quick on this Reggie. Bonus: old school Angels cap.

I grabbed a few Kellogs for some of you out there also. Next up is another glorious Rickey card...

I was hunting some football cards as well. Reader Tim had mentioned a Steelers for Raiders trade, so I dug up some Steelers to offer. I'll be shooting those out to you soon, Tim.

I also grabbed this cool 1,000 Yard Club card with Eric Dickerson. I've got one from the same set of Marcus Allen. Love the looks of these.

Dickerson makes radio show appearances at local BJs restaurants, so I've got this card pegged to get his in person auto.

Finally tonight, because it's a little late and I want to get this post up quickly, we'll end with something beautiful from Masterpiece.

Tune in next time for Part Two: The Vintage is Mine

It's Card Show Day!

Aloha, everybody,

Today is a special holiday that comes at different times for all of us. Unfortunately, for some of us, it's a rare occurrence, for others it requires driving for hours. But we all know how special and exciting it is when it happens.

CARD SHOW DAY!

I'm lucky enough to live within a 30-minute drive, so that's where I'm off to today. While I'm gone, check out these beauties that I picked up on my previous Card Show Day.

Leading off are some cards from a dealer that had a box of a couple hundred vintage cards. It was a NICE selection. Cards I haven't seen at the show in eons. Hall of Famers galore, and 99% of them in very good condition (at least). I wasn't crazy about the fact nothing was priced.

He doesn't usually carry vintage, so I figured this came from some collector dumping a collection off to him, and I was hoping he was going to dump this stuff off to us.

I walked away with a few. Leading off are some Kellogs 3-Ds for my PCs.

I really don't prefer when a dealer doesn't price his cards because I end up doing a lot of hunting, just to hear him quote some unrealistic price book (or higher) numbers.

I asked him what the cards were going for and he told me to choose what I liked, and I wouldn't believe how low his prices were.

After selecting a few with names like Berra, Aaron and Koufax to name a few, I asked his price. Was there a great unbelievable deal to be had? Not in my opinion. I grabbed these lesser cards with lesser names and made due.

Gotta grab a tribute card of the Hit King...

I've decided to expand my humble Rickey Henderson PC. This one was very attactive to me because Rickey's batting in the photo, and sliding into base on the hologram...

Here's a great shot of Rickey itchin' to take off for second...

This scan unfortunately dulls the shiny goodness of this wonderful Killer card...

More shiny goodness. Mr. Cy Young...

How about some Dodgers from a set I rarely see around...

This upgrades my '65 team set...

Believe it or not, Norm Larker here kicks off my 1961 Dodgers chase, so if you've got '61 Dodgers, I need 'em.

More tribute action. This time from Fleer...

It's not quite the Fourth, but I'm gonna throw this starry Nomo at ya to finish off the post...

Sayonara...and aloha!

A Small Youtube Video Starring Little ol' Me, and a Small Trade

Aloha, everybody,

Many of you may already know, I've been honing my chops as a blogger not only in our little community, but also in the Dodgers blogger worlds as well.

I write for LA Dodger Report, and I'm now beginning to dabble in making Youtube video reports for the blog. Why not, right?

I just posted a short series wrap up video commenting on the weekend series the Dodgers and Diamondbacks just completed. I thought a couple of you might be interested, so here's the video:

I completed a one-card trade recently with Peter K. Steinberg, who is as gracious a person as he is a trader. We put together a small trade, and here's the cardboard gem that Peter sent over to me...

I semi-collect RickeyHenderson, and when I saw this one, I hadda have it. Upon its arrival, I became double glad because of the story on the rear...

This is a tribute card for Rickey's 1,000th steal. Cool. And he swiped it one year to the day after he broke Lou Brock's record. Even better. A very nice addition to my collection.

Thanks, Peter! Thanks to all of you who take a peek at the video as well.

Aloha!

Once More Around The Sun For Us!

Aloha, everybody,

It's raining here in LA, but today is my birthday...so... Yahoooooo!!!

There's no deep message or carefully constructed theme behind today's words and cards. Let's just have a simple party showing a few cardboard heroes in celebration mode.

Of course, the Dodgers shall lead off. Here come a couple of big time World Series MVP pitchers, Mr. Podres and Mr. Koufax...

That's Sandy celebrating a 1963 World Series win. BTW - Koufax (2-0) and Podres (1-0) pitched back to back wins as the Dodgers swept the Yankees.

I first thought about showing Kirk Gibson celebrating as he rounded the bases after his big home run in the 1988 World Series, but I found this card of the guy who hit twice as many as Gibby, and just as many as the Bash Brothers hit in that series...

Gibson's 9th inning heroics would have come up short if not for this Game One home run from Mickey Hatcher in the bottom of the first inning.

How about a little bit more Dodgers happiness...

Next up is a happy gallop from another one of my all-time favorite World Series homers...

I chose this Winfield card because he looks like he's rocking a home run celebration smile on his 1984 Topps card.

Of course somebody who was not shy about on-field celebrations was this man...

The pitcher usually bats last, so we'll close today with another of my favorite pitchers, whom I am happy to share my birthday with...
Happy Birthday to the man they called The Express.

I coulda went with that birthday song from the Beatles where they say it's your birthday, but I don't like the Beatles, sooo...let's run with a funky little tune from my old new wave days...

Aloha!

Dimes? This Box Of Traded Cards Is Worth A Million To Me

Hey everybody,

A while back, Nick, over at the most excellent blog, Dime Boxes, decided he would begin collecting Matt Kemp cardboard.  So I sent over a few Kemps to help him kickstart his new quest.

As most of you blogonauts out there already know, Nick is a proficient and prolific writer.  However, what some of you may not know is what kind of a generous and cool trader he is.  Nick sent over a fantastic batch of cards that fit perfectly in my collection.  They span across teams, players, decades and card company releases.  He included so many cool cards, it was difficult to settle on just which ones to show.  However, settle I did, and here's a sampling of the cardboard goodness Nick sent my way...

Starting off with a beauty, 2001 Upper Deck Legends, Johnny Bench.  What a sweet card this is.  Black and white imagery for that classic feel, surrounded by an understated but dignified frame...

Is it me - or is that Yogi Berra in the dugout?  Here's Berra, a former great catcher studying the new generation's backstop in action.

Good ol' Ralph Kiner is a local boy.  He grew up in the next city over from me - Alhambra, CA.

Above is a  slice of HOFer goodness on a miscut that you almost won't  notice unless it's pointed out.  This card kinda looks like Niekro is trying to remember if he turned off the faucet at home.

From vintage sweetness to modern beauty below...

All rise to World Series Hero, Maz.

It's new to me!  2000 Upper Deck Hitters Club, featuring Cap Anson looking rather dapper.

Below is what Rickey Henderson probably sees when he looks in the mirror..

How about this sweet cut-out Carew !!

Of course Nick tossed in some Dodger goodness for me...

Fantastic card! The greatest L.A. Dodger third baseman ever.

Speaking of fantastic, below is a great card of Satchel Paige, pictured during his time with the Indians...

Cubbie great Santo looks like he's wearing a WBC championship belt.

Blogger Fuji might appreciate these very cool A's cards almost as much as me.  Did somebody just give Reggie a hot foot?

Finally, a Dodger's pitcher batting. No - bunting.  No - risking his fingers bunting...

I wish anger management- challenged hitting "coach" Mark McGwire would take Hyun-Jin Ryu aside and teach him to quit trying to bunt with his fingers completely wrapped around the bat.  I cringe every time I see Ryu trying to bunt.

But then again, I cringe even further when I think about all the great work McGwire has done with the Dodger hitters up to this point.

There's no cringing, however, when I reflect upon this awesome trade with Nick.  THANKs for the great cards, bud!

THANKS for reading, everyone !
