The National Haul Part 4 Non-Dodgers and HOFers

Aloha, everybody,

Here's the final of my 4-video series showing off the cardboard loot I scored on at The National.

I didn't hunt only Dodgers in Chicago, but the brunt of my budget was for them. I managed to grab a few non-Dodgers vintage as well. Let's check em out.

Aloha!

Leftover Vintage Makes its Way from The National to my Hands

Aloha, everybody,

My favorite dealer from my local card show went to the National and returned with a whole lotta vintage that was priced to sell. I was at the card show looking to buy. The perfect cardboard storm arose.

Enjoy. Aloha!

Card Show Loot Part 2 - The Vintage Goodies

Aloha, everybody,

Here's Part Two of the cool cardboard I picked up last week at the card show. Let's go!

This time my vintage dealer had a few cards that got me closer to completing my World Series subset chases. The cards were a bit chewy, but they were priced right, at a quarter or fifty cents.  Believe it or not, these are my first cards from the subsets.

First from the '70 series...

My first card from the 1974 World Series.

That's Boomer behind the plate. I need another copy of this for an auto.

Chalk up my first from the 1960 series also.

This card brings me to the "almost done" point for the '71 series. I just need one more: #226 World Series Game 4.

Next up is a card I hadda have.
Reason 1: This fits my defunct teams collection.
Reason 2: Every collection should contain a guy named Rocky.
Reason 3: "Old friend" status. Rocky began his career as a Brooklyn Dodger.
Reason 4: How about that jaw fulla chaw?

Finally, I can't pass up a bargain Hall of Famer, so ol' Bob Gibson jumped right into my hands and my collection.

Aloha!

Let's See Some Vintage From the Card Show

Aloha, everybody,

I wanted to go to the card show today...but alas...things didn't work out. So let's do the next best thing and check out some cards that I got on my last trip there.

Everybody knows, I love my Dodgers, but this here's the greatest catcher ever...

Here's a new addition for my World Series subsets. I have Games 4, 5, and 6 from this set...

Fleer is a bit of a junk product, but they put together some great combo cards...

Now let's get really vintage...

Maybe fear struck out, but my card searching on that day didn't. Every collection of baseball's legends has gotta have this guy...

You better have one of his cards too...

Did I find any Dodgers? You betcha. Slightly miscut, but I'll take it. A bargain for a quarter in the overpriced LA card market...

More heroes from the Windy City...(all of these are available for trade remember)...

How about some Curt Flood? The Hall of Fame won't let him in...but my collection sure will...

You probably already have about five of this one, right, Mark?
I love those stadium archways in the background.

We'll finish off with a cool LA Angels card from 1961 Topps.

I LOVE vintage! Aloha!

Some Quickie Monday Vintage for the Mix

Aloha, everybody,

I stopped by the card show to see what I can see, and I saw these...

I'd already collected these 1979 Topps All-Time Record Holders, but a couple needed upgrading.

The card this upgrade is replacing is still in very good shape, in case anybody out there wants it.

Here's one I picked up for my World Series collection. Little did I know one of these was already coming my way courtesy Robert from $30 a Week Habit.

Do you need this one, Matt?

Here's one that's neither upgrade nor a double...

I need Games 1 and 3 to complete the 1970 WS subset.

I just couldn't pass up this sweet 1955 Topps "Ripper"...

These dual-player cards from 1975 Topps are an easy and inexpensive way to grab Hall of Famers...

So I double-dipped...

Finally, a little something I picked up with my friend, Mark Hoyle in mind. Give a shout if you want this one.

If not, 1961 Pumpsie will sit just fine in my binder...unless someone needs it?

Aloha!

A JBF Tradeathon Leads to a Vintage-palooza

Aloha, everybody,

Did you participate in JBF's recent Holiday Tradeathon? The creator of the Supertraders, the man who you never (but you really kinda do) wanna have a cardboard war with, is constantly finding new ways to spread his generosity around the blogosphere.

This time it was a tradeathon. Wes offered up cards from different sports, autographs and well-loved vintage. The cards were offered to the first to call dibs, so one had to be vigilant to claim cards that were popular.

I missed a couple of cards that I would have loved to claim, but there were plenty of others that caught my eye, and claim them, I did.

Wes offered up a good amount of vintage and HOFers, both of which fit very well into my collecting wheelhouse, and here are the cards that I chose.

A couple of posts ago, I decided to make a real go at collecting cards from defunct teams. Here's Frank Howard repping the Washington Senators from 1966 Topps...

Howard, who broke into the bigs with the Dodgers, wasn't quite a HOFer, but he put up impressive enough stats:
Rookie of the Year, 2-time AL home run leader, 4-time All Star, AL RBI leader, and a World Series champ.
He'll slide into my collection just fine.

Did I mention there was an offer of well-loved vintage? Who can resist 1954 Topps?
Bonus: Defunct team.

Shantz was no slouch either: 3-time AS, AL MVP, 8 Gold Gloves, AL Wins leader, ML ERA leader, and WS champ!
Bonus: Southpaw
Yeh, Mr. Shantz deserves a slot in my binder.

In the three-hole, HOFer, Harmon Killebrew. I have a very modest PC of the Killer, and this card fit right in.

This Killer card is an absolute beauty! Mirrory and refractory, it dazzles as it catches the light. 2014 Panini HOF Red Framed 08/50

When I started collecting in the early 90's, Mickey Mantle cards were the bee's knees. I never lost my eye for Mantles. This one is an Upper Deck calling card commemorating the Mick's 500th homer.
Bonus: Defunct Yankee Stadium

The last of the cards I chose brings us back to 1966 Topps and another HOFer. This time it's one of the just 24 men to have pitched a perfect game...

Bunning also pitched a no-hitter, was an 9-time AS, 3-time SO leader, and had his number retired by the Phillies, and he was a Dodger. Yup, I'll claim a Jim Bunning card.

If those awesome picks weren't enough, good ol' Wes dropped in a bonus pack of 1995 Fleer. I pulled an abomination...

And a second ex-Dodger, this time as a Met (I know, he's an ex-Giant, but we don't speak of such things in these parts),

This card was the highlight of the pack. Gimme World Series Heroes every day of the week!

Carter's WS heroic home run is forever implanted in my mind, so this was a great pull.

Awesome cards from an awesome dude. THANKS, Wes!

Aloha!

Old Aint Always A Bad Thing

Aloha, everybody,

A couple of weeks ago I received a surprise PWE from a reader. Not just any reader, mind you.

Although he doesn't blog, this guy is familiar to many of us because he is very much a part of our community. He comments on our posts, he's a most excellent trade partner, and...sometimes he just drops surprise cards on us because he's cool like that. Join me in appreciating and enjoying the fistful of vintage that came to me from Mark H.

I absolutely dig the old-time World Series subsets, so when the first card I saw out of the envelope was this one...I knew it was gonna be a good day.

As I flipped past each one, it exposed another WS card underneath! I said to myself - but out loud, "No way!"

These cards are 43 years old, and they still rock! Dig the old time shinguards on catcher Elrod Hendricks from the O's. Stirrups! Dirt flying at the old stadiums. That smoky photography of the day.

How often do you see a PITCHER with a dirty uni like the Pirates' Nelson Briles here? It's the freakin' World Series and homeboy wants to win.

Mark's given me a good head start toward completion of the subset, so I now have some very cool cards to be chasing.  For those who are so inclined, I've listed the remaining cards I need here on the page of subsets I'm chasing. Any help would certainly be welcome.

Mark sent over lots more '72's. In keeping with the World Series vibe, here's card #1 from that year's set...

Here's one for you, Matt.

Got pitching?

"At least that crease isn't running through my baby blues."

Note the old time California state halo sleeve patch.

Note the old time chaw-cheek.

You gotta love these...

How about this one, Matt?

"And then one day...one day...some kids from the neighborhood carried the groceries home for my mother. Do you know why? It was outta respect..."

Rounding out the PWE was more vintage; this time Dodgers...

"Grrrrr..."

Closing things out was a bit of modernity...

THANKS, Mark, for the wonderful surprise cards.

Aloha!
